10 Questions Every Scholar Should Ask Before They Begin

Becoming a scholar is not just an academic decision — it’s an identity decision.
It’s emotional.
It’s cultural.
It’s personal.
It’s spiritual.
It’s transformative.

Episode 1 of the Becoming Black Scholarly Podcast introduces the foundation:
Becoming is interior work before it’s academic work.

These reflection prompts are designed to help you locate yourself inside that truth.

You don’t need to answer all of them today.
You don’t need to answer them perfectly.
You don’t need to share them with anyone.

Just sit with them.
Let them work on you.
Let them open something in you.

Here are the 10 questions every scholar should ask before they begin:

1. Who am I becoming — and who do I no longer want to be?

Becoming requires release.
What identities, narratives, or expectations are you shedding?

2. What is the story I’ve been told about who gets to be a scholar?

And more importantly —
Do I still believe that story?

3. What question, idea, or curiosity keeps tugging at me?

This is often the seed of your scholarly identity.

4. What emotional patterns do I bring into academic spaces?

Fear?
Perfectionism?
Avoidance?
Overachievement?
Silence?
Confidence?

Name them so they don’t name you.

5. How has my lived experience shaped the way I see the world?

Your life is not a barrier to scholarship — it is a methodology.

6. What do I need in order to feel supported as I become a scholar?

Community?
Structure?
Accountability?
Belonging?
Affirmation?

Be honest about your needs.

7. What am I afraid of — and what is that fear trying to protect?

Fear is information.
It’s not the enemy.
It’s a messenger.

8. What does “belonging” look like for me in scholarly spaces?

Not the belonging you’ve been taught to perform —
the belonging you actually desire.

9. What would it look like to pursue scholarship without shrinking?

Imagine yourself unfiltered.
Unapologetic.
Untranslated.

What changes?

10. What is my “why” beneath the polished version?

Not the version for applications.
Not the version for social media.
Not the version for family.

The real one.

Closing Reflection

You don’t become a scholar by accident.
You become one by asking better questions —
questions about identity, purpose, belonging, and becoming.

These prompts are not a checklist.
They’re a mirror.
A compass.
A grounding.

Sit with them.
Return to them.
Let them shape your becoming.
